Meals on Wheels...

This is our "Ha Baht" Man (5 baht man)...every day (except Tuesday) he drives through the village selling all sorts of food ranging from fruit and vege, sweets, fresh meat, fish, drinks, curry..you name it, he's got it! And how much for these items, you're thinking....funnily enough 5 baht...well, that's a bit misleading because the meat can get up to 20 baht (less than a dollar) but who's complaining!

Thailand's version of door-to-door salesmen are private cars/utes filled to the brim with anything you can imagine, trailing the village streets with a loud speaker calling out their goods. Be it clothes, furniture, brooms and other hardware, plants, pork (cut up on a tarp in the back of an open ute...lurvly!), really the list could go on... Services such as rodent/pest control, toilet drainage and Jatukarm (amulet) makers also make the rounds with the speakers blaring.

You might have the impression that village life would be nice and peacefully quiet! Not so I assure you...they just don't have sound boundaries here...as in, it's perfectly acceptable to have Karaoke so loud it hurts your ears and rattles your windows til all hours of the morning, and likewise these cars that patrol the streets with high decibel loud speakers have free range. ....

I've just re-read my post and somehow, somewhere, some time, I've turned into a grouchy old man complaining about all the noise down there, sonny....I've been indoors too much today obviously, typing Thai...seriously, I spent 7 hours at my computer today typing Thai! Part of our business at home is typing letters, etc and we've been super busy this week...too bad I can't say "Yay the weekend is here"...no such thing for me anymore (which I actually love - don't have to LIVE for the weekend to come around!)...I do tend to live in a kind of time warp though and loose days quite frequently! Guess it doesn't matter when I don't need to be anywhere....yeah, it's a tough life, I know!

Know exactly what you mean about the vans coming round....first time I heard one I thought it was some kind of political rally but no.....it was just a wee woman selling fruit!!
